Just like our kids, some parents prefer to have information presented auditorily, rather than just in print. Arizona Advocates, owned by Kim Yamamoto, takes advantage of this by offering many videos to help parents understand the IEP and 504 process. Kim’s information helps parents to effectively advocate for their child.
Kim has over 12 years of experience working with families in Arizona. She advocated for her own son who has autism. This experience combined with her educational background as a paralegal, has created a perfect combination as she helps many families with their special education process. Along with videos, Kim also provides articles.
This video provides tips on how to get started in special education. Kim explains that some school districts will start with a child/student study team. Michele Hancock wrote an excellent post titled the The Student Study Team (SST) describing this process, as well as providing an example.
Kim covers the following points in her quick overview:
- Sign a permission slip to start evaluation process.
- Examine all areas of suspected disability.
- Present outside evaluations to the IEP team.
- Obtain an independent evaluation, if you disagree with the school’s evaluation.
- Determine child’s eligibility for services.
- Decide if the child qualifies for an IEP or 504.
